Lesson 4: Make Time & Sit Comfortably

There is very little you need to do to prepare for meditation. All you need to do is make time and find a comfortable, upright seated position.

It doesn’t even have to be a place that is completely silent. However, if you are a new meditator, you will generally find it easier to meditate in a quiet environment where you won’t be disturbed.

Where should I sit?

Find your very favorite place to sit where you are most comfortable. Ideally, away from distractions. This will be your meditation spot until you discover you may want to try another place that could be even more comfortable. You do not need to sit in the same place every time you meditate.

How should I sit?

You want to be seated comfortably for the duration of the meditation. Your body shouldn’t feel any additional pressure or pain in the seated position you choose.

It is recommended to sit up, rather than lie down. The body associates lying down with falling asleep.

Can I move during meditation?

You may move as much as you need to during meditation to make yourself comfortable. Similar to being immersed in a deep conversation with a friend, with time you may find yourself becoming more still and leaning in to listen.

What should I expect?

You are not meditating for the experience in meditation. You are meditating to receive the benefits in your life.

It is my recommendation that you release all expectations and never judge your meditations.

Come to each meditation with curiosity. Each one will give you exactly what you need at that time.

In my personal practice, sometimes my meditations are very calm and relaxed. Other times, my thoughts are racing because I have a lot of physical or mental stress that needs to be released. Sleep is normal, too. All of these experiences are normal.

The only expectation you should have in meditation is that if you make the time, you will begin to see the benefits show up in your life.

How do I know if I’m meditating correctly?

Look at your lifestyle. How are things starting to change in your life?

Meditation is a practice that will enrich your life. Meditate effortlessly without force or concentration and always come back to the source of your meditation. This may be conscious breathing or a mantra, which you will learn in the next lesson. Whenever you notice you’ve drifted away, if you kindly come back to the source of meditation, you will know you are meditating correctly.

It is simply sitting silently, witnessing the thoughts, passing before you. Just witnessing, not interfering not even judging, because the moment you judge you have lost the pure witness. The moment you say “this is good, this is bad,” you have already jumped onto the thought process. – Osho
